Abrasio

Neem contact op

Abrasion is the treatment used by the Melles Cornea Clinic to treat corneal erosion. Corneal erosion is extremely painful and superficial damage to the cornea. This often results in tearing, light sensitivity, a scrunching reflex and the feeling that there is something in your eye. If the damage is more severe, it can also result in impaired vision.

In most cases, corneal erosion is easy to treat using cream and a bandage or a bandage lens. In some cases, the erosion will reoccur. This can even happen months after the initial erosion. This is known as recidivist erosion. If the corneal erosion keeps recurring, a more structural and intensive type of therapy will be required, like abrasion.

The treatment

This treatment is carried out in an operating room. Just before the abrasion, the edge of the eyelid, the skin surrounding the eye and the eyebrow are disinfected using betadine. The eye is then locally anaesthetised using eye drops. During an abrasion, the epithelium of the cornea is removed so that a smooth wound surface is created on which new epithelial cells can grow and bond properly.

After the treatment

After the surgery, cream will be applied to your eye, and a clear eye patch or bandage lens will be used to protect the eye. You can go home once the procedure has been completed. We recommend you bring someone with you, as your vision may be temporarily impaired following treatment.

You may experience some discomfort, and it’s a good idea to take it easy. You’ll use the eye drops we have prescribed for several days after the treatment, as this will help your eye heal properly and reduce the risk of infection.
