Pterygiumexcisie

Neem contact op

In many cases, no treatment is needed for a pterygium, or eye drops or creams are sufficient for treating the irritation and inflammation. If the pterygium continues to grow to such an extent that vision becomes impaired or the irritation cannot be resolved using medication, the pterygium can be surgically removed. An amino membrane graft is usually applied following this treatment to aid healing. Absorbable sutures are used.

An amino membrane is the inner layer of a placenta and has several highly beneficial qualities which can contribute to the effective recovery of the cornea. Namely, the amino membrane offers a good surface on which new cells can grow and on which a smooth surface can be formed. Furthermore, an amino membrane reduces the risk of an infection which could result in the pterygium growing back.

The treatment

This treatment takes place in an operating room. Just before the removal of the pterygium, the edge of the eyelid, the skin surrounding the eye and the eyebrow are disinfected using betadine. The eye is then locally anaesthetised using eye drops or an injection.

Following the treatment

After the surgery, cream will be applied to your eye, and a clear eye patch or bandage lens will be used to protect the eye. You can go home once the procedure has been completed. We recommend you bring someone with you, as your vision may be temporarily impaired following treatment.

You may experience some discomfort, and it’s a good idea to take it easy. You’ll use the eye drops we have prescribed for several days after the treatment, as this will help your eye heal properly and reduce the risk of infection.
